Will the Patriots make a play for DeAndre Hopkins?
In April, receiver DeAndre Hopkins used body language and facial expressions to indicate: (1) significant interest in joining the Chiefs or Bills; (2) little or no interest in joining the Jets or Patriots.
With Hopkins now four days into free agency, could the Patriots make a play for him?
Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston recently explored the various angles.
On one hand, Hopkins isn't (as Perry writes) a "program fit." Hopkins is not known for practicing hard, or very much. He might not be willing to submit to the Stepford Patriot playbook.
But he can produce. Even though he's not a guy who stretches the field, he gets open and catches the ball. He’d make the Patriots better on paper.
The other complication comes from the fact that Hopkins has a history with offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. The Texans traded Hopkins when O’Brien was the coach there. Any damage from years gone by would have to be undone.
And it surely won't be cheap to get Hopkins. It won't be an easy fit. It would be out of character for a Bill Belichick-coached team to even try it.
But Belichick (declined to discuss Hopkins earlier this week) has tried it before, bringing in players who wouldn't, on the surface, seem to fit. It worked with Randy Moss; it didn't work with Chad Johnson.
Still, to get Hopkins to even give it a try will mean to persuade him to change his position from April, when he made it clear without saying a word that New England was not on his short list for next team.
To make that happen, the Patriots would have to be offering more than other contenders — or all contenders would have to be offering so little that someone the Patriots say or do will let Hopkins know he should pass on the Chiefs or Bills or some other short-list contender and cast his lot with the Pats.
Justin Jefferson and Cooper Kupp wouldnt help that noodle armed half wit at QB…
Much less Hopkins
Only on vet minimum. Stop dreaming.
Short answer is ‘Dear God no’.
Long answer is ‘Dear God please no.’
Gosh, this is a new theory that hasn't been hashed out yet?
They should trade for both Ryan Tannehill and Hopkins. Mac Jones is just not that guy. Since Belichick is terrible at drafting and has won nothing without Brady, the Patriots can only succeed with trades at this point.
No thanks.
Let's see. 1. Not a program fit. 2. Doesn't like to practice. 3. Despite showing signs of decline, suspension for PEDs, but still demands a big paycheck (as he did in Houston).
Not going to NE and if his salary demands don't come to earth, he's not going anywhere.
D-Hop is not a New England type of guy. He wants his targets. He wants his numbers. Winning is secondary for him despite what he proclaims. If winning is really important, he would take a pay cut and sign with the Chiefs.
He wouldn't make it through one day in Foxboro. He's a slacker who happens to be uber talented, but that doesn't change the fact he has a sub par work ethic, and Bill can't stand guys like that
Belichick is all about having a military-style culture where coaches act like drill sergeants and players respond, Sir yes sir! I don't see Hopkins as a fit in that culture. Randy Moss got kicked out real quick.
Make it happen Bill. You’re the chess master at coaching, being G.M., and making cap. space room. Should be the Belechick way.
Jones looked okay as a QB in his rookie year (although not the pro bowler he was voted in as). Last year was a disaster at OC so I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. He's still the worst QB in the AFC East but he could be good if supported and given some decent weapons.
Join the Patriots? Two chances: Slim and none.
It really is a waste of money as long as Jones is there with O’Brien as OC. They’ll continue to run the ball 80% of the time. Hopkins would be miserable.
Please talk talking about this dude.. make a decision already.
He hasn't fallen enough for Belichick to take the risk (financially).

The fact of the matter is that while Brady was one of the best QBs of all time, Belichick's defenses were some of the best in the league.
I’d rather see the team invest that money into a top tier tackle or retaining some of the young talent due to hit free agency next year (dugger and onwenu come to mind). D-hop is a fun conversation but just not realistic

Awesome post!
This is like trying to to have a relationship with an alpha widow. In her mind, you will never be him, but since he's not coming back, you might just be "good enough" to settle for in her eyes. It doesn't matter what you do, or how good you are, you won't be able to compete with what is imprinted on her imagination. You are doomed to repeatedly having to go out to the trash and root around in the barrel trying to piece together the relationship from the latest in a string of relationship breakdowns that are, unknowingly to you, a result of her pining for the other guy. The problem with that is you get dirty, and your neighbors get to watch you do it. In these cases, it is ALWAYS best to let go of that relationship and seek out new, better, and fresher opportunities than trying to glue the pieces of a broken relationship back together, only to see them break into pieces again at the next turn of her emotions. The man made his feelings known. I would not invest the effort to "try and make it work." The down side here is too great. I vote no.
Miami and the Jets aren't going to do squat this year. Perennial big talkers during the off-season. Same thing, year after year. They are both soft and squishy. No toughness. No guts. Concussavaloa and Rodgers don't scare anyone.
Buffalo will still be decent, but the AFC East is coming back to New England.
Discount Mac at your peril.
it's intersting to see so many experts on who and what BB and the Pats are, meanwhile most of you are dead wrong and are clearly showing your lack of knowledge in re BB– just for one example, go back and take a look at how many players have said they were surprised at how funny BB is. Also what is wrong with hard work? isn't that waht you want your team to do, work hard? hypocritical if so
Interesting that most Pats fans here don't seem to want him.
This isn't the old days. This is absolutely the kind of move NE would have to make to compete in today's AFC East, and the AFC in general.
Belichek can't succeed without Brady. Pete keeps winning with Geno.
So in other words, this is a total non-story which is never going to happen, why are we even talking about it?
2 problems with this that I see: he doesn't want to play for the Patriots, and they would never pay him what he thinks he's worth.
Buffalo will still be decent, but the AFC East is coming back to New England.____________Fantasies rock.
So here's a 31 year old who had injuries recently as well as a PED suspension. Gee why would PEDs come into play…
Not hard to understand why the Patriots should say no.
Pass.
no one is going to the Pats to win right now. If anything, its for the Bill Belichick experience. Doesn't sound like he wants anything to do with that
Only 3 All Pro WRs have won a SBowl in the last 23 yrs. The declining, expensive Hopkins isn't even that anymore. Doesn't seem like a move the Pats would make.
So, during Hopkin's historical month, we celebrate and we honor the WR's who made history throughout history, who saw what could be unburdened by what had been.
No quality WR in the world would choose to play with Mac Jones.
If the Patriots were still a good team, this would be an interesting story. However, they have a JAG quarterback. The days of Tom Brady are a few years gone. They were amazing and had an incredible run that some people think (for reasons unknown) that they’re still in it. But unless Mac Jones transforms into a different person altogether, the Pats are not a contender until further notice.

The fact of the matter is that while Brady was one of the best QBs of all time, Belichick's defenses were some of the best in the league.———————————————————————-And his defense is still on if the best in the league. In fact, his defense was ranked 8th at the end of last season and they didn't even make the playoffs. The season prior, the Bills destroyed them in the playoffs. The season before that? They didn't even have a winning record. Any other players on the team? Yeah, it helps when the best QB in the league was taking a below market value contract. Max Hones has other people in his team and a good defense. How has that worked out? Yeah, it wasn't Brady.
Belichick had all the time in the world to trade for a veteran quarterback these last few seasons. Instead, he's putting all the chips down on Jones. Mark my words, this decision will backfire.
Not close to a difference maker this oft injured and overpaid prima donna isn't going to sniff obj money.
Lots of talented first round picks go to poorly managed teams and subsequently never play to their full potential. I never thought the Patriots would be one of them.
They owe Mac Jones some decent players after all of this.
I believe the man said he wanted to go to a team WITH a good QB, not WITHOUT.
I’m completely ok if they do (for a couple years) or if they don't at this stage in his career….I think Bourne could be just as effective given the opportunity & I’m very curious to see if any of the three (Boutte, Douglas, or Nixon) can make a splash this year as well..
YOu act as if Brady didn't need any other players on the team…..or need a defense
++++++++++
Brady needed defense, not Belichick's defense.
If Burrow had scored 24 points in SB, they would have won the SB. If Burrow had scored 24 against chiefs in AFCCG, Bengals would be in SB again.
Bengals would be on the way to become a dynasty with Brady of early 2000s
Bill is getting more desperate by the day
The people that think Mac Jones is garbage will be eating crow this season. Is he elite? No. Is he top 10? Probably not. Can he be top 12? I think so. If you have a good running game and defense, which the Pats have, you can win with that. Actually, they won't eat crow. They’ll just change their username and start with the next bag of balony.

+++++What program? What "way"?
The hollow concept that haven't accomplished anything without Brady?
I really don't think he would play for Billy OB.
If belichick is so great, why has he never done anything without Brady as the QB? Ok sure, those defenses were good but losing the QB doesn't have anything to do with personnel on defense. In fact, it leaves a team with more money to spend on the defense when not paying a QB. That team hasn't even been a relevant threat in a little while. He's just a solid coach who was in the right place at the right time. No more, no less
His defense was a PAPER TIGER that routinely collapsed in big games.
Actually his defense was even worse than Packers's defense on total yards allowed.
That is why he couldn't accomplish anything without Brady and needed lot of lucky break and easy schedule to make playoff.
Well 4 days into Free Agency and I haven't heard of D-Hop getting a single offer yet and the Bills are out now that they signed Oliver to a huge new deal!
BB had a couple of rings before Brady, He was the reason Bill Parcells got them…. He built one of the most ferocious D's in NFL HISTORY…. So to say he's done nothing w/o Brady is just stupidNot defending BB, just pointing out the obvious to those who forgot
Without Coaxh Belichick Tommy would be exactly where he belongs,
A career minor league catcher while the Patriots and Bucs have a REAL man's QB.
Without Gronk, Brady is Andy Dalton. Just look at his 2019 and 2022 seasons, he couldn't win a playoff game.
Belichick, as Head Coach and GM, in the 22 years beginning in 2001, has taken the Patriots to the playoffs in all but 3 seasons, one of which they missed in a tiebreaker despite 11 wins, one after being eliminated in week 18, and one in the year after Brady left with a QB that had Covid.
It is a 22-year playoff run that will never be matched.
Not sure why people are still talking about DHop like he’ll be a difference maker for some team.
No team was willing to trade for him.And now he's languishing on the open market.
Clearly the GM's/Coaches around the league don't think there's any gas left in the tank.
I honestly don't see the appeal on this particular team. We don't use boundary WR all that much unless your name is Randy Moss. We spread it around usually in middle or horizontal. He is old slow injury prone and lazy for 15 million per? Let him go somewhere else. I’m not joking id rather have Parker as our contested catch guy. Bigger stronger faster, good leader and good work ethic on 6 mill. Only need 40-50 catches from the X WR position really.
I am not saying the Patriots should sign Hopkins but to dismiss his ability to get open, make plays, and impact games is foolish.
BB had a couple of rings before Brady, He was the reason Bill Parcells got them
++++++++
When OTHERS gave him offense while he could invest most of resources on defense.
Without it, the garbage went nowhere, like last 3 seasons.
Take 2019 as an example, without Brady, pats would be 7-1 at best in first 8 game, and certainly would have lost to Bills in 2nd meet and had missed playoff.
The more I read abt this guy, the less I like. The Patriots have never needed an all pro WR to win a championship. We win with Edelman, Amendola, T. Brown, Branch, Givens, Patton, Gronkowski (drafted TE), and Malcolm Mitchell (yeah, I know, who?). Branch and Givens hardly tore it up after leaving for greener pastures. We never won a championship with Moss, Welker, C. Johnson, or Woodhead.
So you can forgive Belichick for thinking we can win with 6th round draft picks who spent most of their careers on the Detroit Lions practice squad.
It's not if but when for the Patriots. It's going to be Patriots vs Eagles in the Superbowl.
The Patriots already have one WR that can't get separation. They arent bringing on a more expensive one. Especially one that doesn't want to practice and be treated the same as everyone else.

First of all, you and NHPats infer that Brady is infallible and never made a mistake. Ever. That's your first problem as it was the Boston media who’d rather take shots at BB to brainwash you, than Mr Smiley Nicey, Brady. You either 12 years old or very new to the sport.
Next, in 2006, when Goodell came on board, numerous rule changes started to be made to maximize revenue and increase offensive output, even for crappier teams, a push was made to help offenses. This was about ratings, fantasty football, more eyeballs on tvs, and of course, more money for our low attention span society.
After BB dealt Branch for a 1st rder and Brady sucked in the 2nd half of the 2006 AFC Title game, not able to move the ball in the second half at all, he exploded on BB during the exit interview (Per Paul Perillo) regarding having more high end weaponry, which is to be understood considering the Branch move, while the right move based on Branch's outrageous #1 WR demdands, completely understandable for Brady the Garbage.
So, BB moved the teambuilding more into offense mainly because Brady saw Manning getting more attention from the media and fans based on stats and how many more Pro Bowl weapons Manning had compared to him. BB supported his HOF QB.
So, BB signed Stallworth, traded for Moss and Welker and also improved the D with Seau, Adalius Thomas, etc. The offense was loaded beyond belief, but by about Week 12, Brady's addiction to just Moss/Welker was seen by every Def Coordinator and educated fan across the country. It started with Philly's Jim Johnson. Guys like Ben Watson, Stallworth, etc, became ignored, because MOST of the time, Moss/Welker would be open most of the game vs bad or mediocre Ds.
From 2007-2012, within the idea they were building around Brady MORE as opposed to the D and STs helping Brady early in his career, Brady was throwing EXCLUSIVELY from the shotgun with FULL AUTONOMY. Vic Caruuci wrote in 2009, that only Manning and Brady had multiple plays called in and with full autonomy. They were the only 2. This means Brady was not only doing what he wanted on every snap, he had MORE responsbility.
This means Brady had MORE responsibility and MORE support for what he wanted. BB gave him more POWER. Get it?
But, the truth is, NE had no business in either SB 42 or SB 46 with the god awful AFC Title games Brady had at home in those sesasons and the inferior part of the team (the defense) OUTPLAYED the offense's ceiling, led by Brady the Garbage and his "preferred shotgun spread base, without a true in line TE or Fullback.
This is why BB brought in Develin in 2013 and drafted Gronk in 2010. Brady was failing without these 2 components when he faced man cover Ds and Ds that didn't suck or play zone. It's why he always shredded Pitt's Zone D or would demolish some cupcake team in the divisional rd at home.
The offense Brady wanted WAS IMBALANCED by choice. Brady's choice because that's what Manning wanted in Indy. He was obsessed with Manning and Manning gettting the attention as he sat there with 3 rings and Manning was a notorious postseason choker. Ironically, Manning finally understood that and changed. Brady went the other way until BB drafted JimmyG and worked with him daily to be able to trade Brady for picks, which obviously never happened, because Brady got the message anf got back under Center a lot more than any time prior to 2006.
Aaron Rodgers just did this recently in GB. The parallels are uncanny, actually.
Ignoring a run game and throwing more, to stop the clock with leads, turning it over, and gassing your D like Manning always did, is beyond stupid.
It's that simple. If you’re a Pats fan, why would you want your own QB to make it harder on your D in an offensive era?
It means you don't understand the sport. In SB 46, if Brady wasn't lazy to start the game with a Safety, NE wins that game alone simply by running 3 more plays and 2 mins of clock. The Giants never would have had time at the end. That one play.
Brady the Garbage went from being the best at managing a game in NFL history to a programmable shotgun spread robot like a statue for 45+ times, 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage, which means he was very predictable.
Say whatever you want, the team built by Belichick the garbage wouldn't have won a single SB with any other QB, because the talents he put around Brady wouldn't be enough for other QB to do what Brady did.
Brady needed defense, but it didn't have to be Belichick's defense that routinely collapsed in 4th quarters when needed.
+++++++++++++++++
FYI
1999 Rams offense scored only 11 points against Bucs defense in NFCCG; scored only 23 points against Titans #15 defense.2000 Rams offense scored only 7 point till the scored was 7-31 with only 9:30 minutes left.
Lot of coaches could have done what Belichick did or could have done better with the resource invested on defense.

You have to be a teenager or a 20 something. The amount of NFL history you don't know or knowledge of the sport, while pretending to be some kind of a football authority, is fascintating.
There's a reason complimentary football and a balanced team means you have a good team. An offense can help a D and vice versa.
You seem to think a QB is not to be held accountable for anything when they stink in a game, which is ironic coming from the crowd that thinks the QB does it all (Offense, blocking, kicking, defense, etc).

Not true. I disagreed with who they had on who in that game. Gilmour should have been on Agoholor. Rowe on Jefferey with help over the top.
McCourty should should have been brought into the box more as well.
I have disagreed with BB plenty.
Chung shut down Ertz and then broke his arm. Jon Jones, Hightower and Chung all of NE's best defenders were not available.
In the final minutes, your favorite part of the game, Brady choked. lol
That's what is most important in a shootout. Our QB wilted when it mattered.

They should have eliminated Foles first and quickest blanket looks. Chung shut down Ertz beautifully until the injury.
The worst play on D was Harmon late on being on top of the Jeffrey deep end zone TD. Should have never happened. I would have told Harmon to never leave that side or the top with ROwe underneath.
The problem was Philly got 14 free points, one on the Clement TD which wasn't a TD on replay and the illegal formation TD before half. It's bizarre how the league lies about it being an illegall formation.
I wish the Pats would get a free 14 points in a SB.
I wish the Pats would get a free 14 points in a SB.____________LOL!!!
The Patriots were given a free pass for years. Goodell knew what they were doing and looked the other way. Quit whining.
All the patriots fans here saying they dont want him must not have watched the offense the last couple of years. You know its a sad state of affairs when a 30yr old FA WR becomes your best offensive player.. HAHA.
